Description

What is Aspartame?
Aspartame is one kind of sweetener. It is 250 times sweeter than table sugar and widely used in food.

(1) It has a refreshing sweetness similar to sucrose, without bitter aftertaste and metallic taste. Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sucrose, and only a small amount is needed to achieve sweetness in application, so it is used as a sugar substitute in food and beverages.
(2) It has a synergistic effect when mixed with sucrose or other sweeteners. For example, adding 2% to 3% to saccharin can mask the bad taste of saccharin.
(3) It has a synergistic effect when mixed with flavors, especially for acidic citrus, lemon, grapefruit, etc., which can make the fragrance last longer and reduce the amount of fragrance.

Aspartame can be used in the food industry:

.Beverages: Carbonated and still soft drinks and fruit syrups

.Dry mixes: hot and cold chocolate and beverage mixes and instant desserts

.Dairy: yoghurt, frozen novelties and desserts

.Confectionery: chewing gum, boiled sweets

Does Aspartame Cause Cancer?
On July 14, 2023, the WHO official website released a message saying that Aspartame, the most commonly used artificial sweetener in the food industry, is "probably carcinogenic to humans." This news was released by IARC, a subsidiary of WHO. IARC has analyzed about 1,000 different chemicals, about half of which are listed as suspected carcinogens, including tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, red meat and all fried foods. IARC divides all these potentially carcinogenic substances into three categories: Class I is a confirmed carcinogen, Class II is a possible carcinogen, and Class III is a suspected carcinogen. However, this classification is based on the credibility of carcinogenic evidence, not the size of carcinogenicity. For example, the reason why alcohol is a Class I carcinogen is that there is currently conclusive evidence that alcoholic beverages can cause cancer, but how much alcohol is really carcinogenic? This agency doesn't care.

Aspartame is classified as Class 2B, in the same class as dichlorvos, melamine, aflatoxin and caffeic acid. This classification does not mean that aspartame is as terrible as these things, but that the evidence about the carcinogenicity of aspartame is about the same level as the evidence about the carcinogenicity of these things, and both belong to the category of "possible carcinogens", that is, there is some evidence that they can cause cancer, but there is also some other evidence that they will not cause cancer, and further research is needed to determine.

Secondly, JECFA, another relevant agency under WHO, also released another message at the same time, saying that their daily allowable intake of aspartame has not changed, and it is still 40 mg per kilogram of body weight. What's going on?

It turns out that this JECFA is a real B2C public health and health advisory agency. It is not responsible for studying whether a certain chemical is carcinogenic or not, but only cares about how much of this chemical is safe to consume every day. According to JECFA, a healthy adult with normal weight will be fine as long as he drinks no more than 10 cans of sugar-free cola (approximately) a day. It is worth noting that this is the third time that JECFA has evaluated the safe dose of aspartame, and the conclusion remains unchanged.

Sucralose VS Aspartame
Sucralose and aspartame are both sweeteners, but they are sweeter than regular sugar, and usually add a little to food and drinks to make them sweet. They are suitable for people who want to lose weight and people with diabetes. Sucralose is sweeter than aspartame, about thousands of times sweeter than sucrose, and only a very small amount of sucralose is needed in food processing to achieve the same sweetness. This makes it widely used in some products that require extremely high sweetness. Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sucrose, which is lower than sucralose. Aspartame is also more commonly used in beverages and other foods. It is closer to sucrose in taste and flavor, and is usually used in smaller amounts.

The Applications of Aspartame:
1. Food: used for dairy products, meat products, baked products, flour products, etc.
2. Feed: pet canned food, animal feed, aquatic feed, vitamin feed, etc.
